How a laser engraving on wood looks
In short: the laser burns the design in. No varnish, no paint, no sticker.
Dark and tangible
The burned area turns dark brown to black and stands out clearly against the grain. You do not just see the engraving, you feel it.
Every grain is different
Because no two pieces of wood are alike, every engraved wooden item is automatically unique. The contrast varies with the type of wood.
No paint, no chemicals
Nothing is applied — the engraving is burned wood. An engraved cutting board stays a perfectly normal kitchen board.
Long boards too
Length and width do not matter, only height or diameter up to 15 cm. Designs larger than 20 × 20 cm are combined from several passes.
The evergreen is the cutting board: with names and a date for a wedding, with the new address for a housewarming, with a logo as a corporate gift. Our size rule is made for exactly that — a long board is no problem, because only the height counts.
Light woods such as maple or birch give the strongest contrast; dark woods look more restrained and refined. Varnished or oiled surfaces behave differently — with items you bring, we look at that beforehand.
Logos work very well on wood. Photo engravings are partly possible depending on the image and the type of wood; send us your file on WhatsApp beforehand and we will tell you honestly whether the result will convince. Logos and photos cost more.

Frequently asked questions about wood engraving
What can be engraved on wood?
Almost anything made of wood: cutting boards, wooden spoons, boxes, caskets, trays, coasters, tree slices, knife handles and keepsakes. At sofortgravur.at in 1080 Vienna we also engrave wooden items you bring yourself, without an appointment.
How does a laser engraving on wood look?
With a laser engraving on wood, the laser beam burns the design into the surface. The engraved area turns dark brown to black, can be felt with your finger and stands out clearly against the grain. Depending on the type of wood the contrast is lighter or darker.
Can you engrave a large cutting board?
Yes. Length and width make no difference to us — only the height or diameter may be up to 15 cm. A long cutting board is therefore no problem. Designs larger than 20 × 20 cm are combined from several passes.
Is a wood engraving food safe?
With a laser engraving on wood no paints or chemicals are applied — the engraving is simply burned wood. An engraved cutting board can be used in the kitchen exactly as before.
Which wood is best for engraving?
Light woods such as maple, birch or beech give the strongest contrast, because the burned area is much darker than the wood. Dark woods such as walnut look more restrained and refined. Both work — it is a matter of taste.
Can I bring my own wooden item?
Yes. Bring your wooden item to Josefstädter Straße 58, 1080 Vienna during opening hours — no appointment needed. With varnished or oiled surfaces we look at the piece beforehand and tell you what to expect.
How much does wood engraving cost in Vienna?
At sofortgravur.at in 1080 Vienna most single engravings on wood cost between 20 and 25 euros as a flat price, regardless of the length of the text. Series — cutting boards as a corporate gift, for example — start at 2.50 euros per piece by arrangement. Logos and photo engravings cost more.
Can you engrave a photo or a logo on wood?
Logos work very well on wood and come out clean and sharp. Photo engravings are partly possible depending on the image and the type of wood — send us your file on WhatsApp beforehand and we will tell you whether the result will convince. Both cost more than a plain text engraving.
How long does an engraving on wood last?
Permanently. Because the design is burned into the wood rather than applied on top, it cannot flake or be washed off. A heavily used cutting board will darken over the years — the engraving stays visible regardless.
Your board is waiting for its name
Bring it in — usually engraved in 5 to 15 minutes. Or ask us quickly on WhatsApp first.
